Cheri tells her story My weight issues story started as a baby, when my parents were told
by my grandfather to feed me every time I cried. “If she isn’t wet then
feed her!” he would say. He wasn’t being mean, that way of thinking
was just the conventional wisdom at the time. So I grew into quite a
plump baby! I remember being in 4th grade and just wanting to
unroll the extra flesh off me like unrolling a garden hose. When I
entered high school, I began dieting and trying to lose the weight.
Not knowing what to do, I literally stopped eating and dropped down
to a scary 87 pounds. For the next few years I tried to manage my
weight in many ways, never healthy ones that honored me or my
body—in fact quite the opposite. I tried pills, throwing up, laxatives,
crazy, fad diets, all in the name of looking better but never ever
feeling better or good about myself.
During my last year of Theatre graduate school I began gaining
weight again due to the stress of a break-up of a long term
relationship. Instead of being supportive, the heads of the theatre
department threatened me and told me to “pull it together and lose
weight." They told me I was enrolled in their program to play a
certain “type” of role and that wasn’t fat characters!
I did Weight Watchers after college and lost a lot of weight. I got
down to about 130 pounds but began gaining it all back again.
Desperate to try something easy and fast, I tried liposuction, which
worked in the short term, but ultimately I gained that weight back
too. And FYI, when you gain weight back from liposuction you gain it
in other places because the fat cells from the areas they were sucked
out are gone! I felt like I was at wit’s end. I knew I couldn’t go on
living like this—going up and down the scale, but the years of
dieting had taken my confidence away from me and left me with a lot
of limiting beliefs and habits.
In 2005 I was asked to join a commercial weight loss program that
incorporated exercise CDs. I began to lose weight with this program.
For the first time I really found that I enjoyed exercise. I began
releasing weight and took about 50 pound off. Then I couldn’t seem
to lose anymore. I began to worry because I didn’t want to gain the
weight back, but I felt that this was exactly what was going to
happen. It was around this time I heard about Rita and her cognitive
–based Shift Weight Mastery Process. I was open to the idea of
hypnosis and knew that really if I was going to make a real change
and keep the weight off for good, I was going to have to change my
thinking—not just exercise more and eat less (time had proven that
only got me so far!). I did my Shift back in June of 2009, weighing
around 145. As of today, a year and a half later, I am 121- lbs, and
don't feel like I ever deprived myself, starved myself, white knuckled
it, nothing! I got to eat what I wanted, when I wanted, how I wanted,
just by staying within my gas tank for releasing weight.
I have gained the confidence and internal thinking processes that
really help me stay conscious and make healthy choices. My habits
have changed and feel permanent. I also enjoy the support from Rita
and other Shifters I have met along the way. This makes me feel like I
am part of something bigger than myself, realizing we all are in this
together and when we unite we are strong—not like when we are
alone in our own diet world with those useless thoughts.
I thank you so much for all you do--Rita, you really are Shifting the
world one person at a time. Alone we diet, together we Shift!!!
